Garland Jeffreys Unveils Hard-Charging Single “Coney Island Winter” From Forthcoming LP

“Twenty-two stops to the city” sings Garland Jeffreys on “Coney Island Winter,” the NYC stalwart’s ripping new single, as he recounts a train ride from the Brooklyn neighborhood he grew up in to Manhattan. The song is an icy lament about a frozen place, vividly brought to life in half-spoken, half-sung poetics. ‘The King Of In Between,’ Garland’s first album in 13 years, will be released this spring.

“Coney Island Winter” is a romping affair, the emphatic thud of the kick drum and wiry guitars propelling this hazy anthem that harkens back to some of Jeffreys’ earliest recordings. The song was recorded three weeks ago and cut in a single take, the thinly veiled lyrics fine-tuned during the session. “Vanity strikes, humility speaks / Insanity lives on the edge of the streets / This is a story, it happens every day / Politicians kiss my ass / Your promises they break like glass,” he sings.
